Explore the Colorful World of Birding

Local Birding Hotspots

Martin Marietta Park

This is the most diverse birding hotspot that Craven County has to offer. Over 220 species have been seen here. The former quarry is also known for producing very rare sightings, such as the 2nd record of Neotropic Cormorant in North Carolina (original checklist July 30, 2022). The biggest attractions for birders are the warblers that pass through during fall migration every September and October. Wilson's, Blackburnian, Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Nashville, just to name a few that are known for appearing here. The winter waterfowl numbers can be impressive as well, especially if more northern habitats experience a deep freeze. The city officially opened the park to the public in 2019, but the LNBC has been birding this site regularly for many years, having gained limited access even when it was still an active quarry.
